There’s something about the structure that a weekday provides — you wake up, you shower (unless you’re one of those nighttime shower people), have a quick breakfast, head off to work, do your work thing, have lunch, do more work, head home, have dinner, and then fill the rest of your evening with whatever’s left. Although it takes intentionality and effort, you can insert things into that schedule and it doesn’t take much to make it a part of your day. Blogging, journaling, and listening to or reading Stoic philosophy has started to become a part of that routine.
But then there’s the weekend — even worse, a four-day holiday weekend. Suddenly there is no structure at all — wake up whenever, get something to eat or have a cup of coffee, sniff sniff – oh yeah I better go shower, sit on my phone and scroll mindlessly for an hour, and then get around to doing something, maybe.
I don’t recall the exact quote, but I encountered it in a few Stoic podcast episodes — that if you don’t set a course, there is no favorable wind. Translate that to a structureless weekend, if I don’t set a course for what to do with my time, then no matter what happens I will remain a drifter being tossed about by the waves with no favorable winds to aid me.
Something needs to change and I need to introduce a little more structure into my life to aid me in my quest to live a more meaningful life. One of the things that I’ve got to help me in my journey is this beautiful journal called “Chapters” from Vertellis. It is a guided journal that helps you reflect on your past, present and future, and helps you both look at what is going good and what could be better.
The book is broken up into thirteen chapters that all set their focus on something different — this first chapter focuses on the concept of enso: strength, clarity and the charm of imperfection. I think that I might split up the entry between the morning and evening, entering some of the content in the morning to help me set my mind on the right course and then in the evening before I head to bed to help me reflect on the day.
I think this is going to be a fun journey to have this tool to aid me over the next 90 days to help me be more mindful, to be more grateful, to be a person of action, and make this life a richer, fuller, and more meaningful life. Back to the topic that opened up this blog entry — structure. One of the things that I think I’m going to back to in my Day One digital journal with is to hash out a really basic structure for my weekend days, much like I did for inserting structure into my weekdays for being more mindful and striving to integrate the framework of Stoicism into my life. I don’t think my blog is the most appropriate place to put those sorts of things, and besides it’s things for my own personal reflection and structure. If this is the sort of thing you want to do for yourself, then you need to think on what it is you want to accomplish with your time, and figure out a structure that works best for you.
Without going into a lot of detail, I do plan on keeping my habits of integrating some of the disciplines that I’ve inserted into my weekdays — journaling, blogging, listening to and reading Stoic philosophy, exercising, and trying to eat and drink in moderation. I think I may even need to put some timeframes on these activities (e.g. 7am – 8am: eat a modest breakfast and listen to a podcast or two, 8am – 9am: go for a 45-minute walk and stretch). I think that if I set a timeframe for those sorts of things, the structure just might aid in accomplishing those goals.
